“They are little dogs who think they are big,” says Lil Caldwell, breeder of Jack Russell terriers. I Jack Russells will do anything; they are absolutely fearless. Gus | Forbush of Huntly sold one of his I Jack Russells to a man in North CarZ olina who wanted to train the dog to hunt bear (YES, BEAR). And he F did. “The bear hounds would go f around the front of the bear, and the Jack Russell would jump him from behind,” said Mr. Forbush. He does wonder, though, if that dog is still alive.
I Mrs. Caldwell, who has eight Jack Russells on her farm in Washington, said that the first ones were bred by Parson Jack Russell in England in the 1800’s, who taught them to go down foxholes and chase the foxes out. They are sometimes used for this purpose in the U.S., and the little dogs will go down any hole they see. She said that the name terrier means “to dig, to go under the earth.” j
