To the Editor:
After reading two letters in last weeks paper, I also feel, not only as a concerned individual, but as a parent who happens to have a child who is a special education student that I too must speak my peace.
I am outraged that there would even be the thought of excluding these children from sharing in the enthusiasm and anticipation of a new classroom along with the rest of the K-2 students.
It seems to me, that a new classroom might just be the ticket so these special ed students might strive harder to improve their scholastic abilities.
I spoke to a school board member concerning this matter, and to my surprise he informed me that he was not even aware that the special ed classroom was already two corridors away from their home rooms and their classmates, in the same hallway with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms.
I feel that this exclusion plays a big part in my son’s learning abilities. For example, when he first started attending these special ed classes one-and-one-half-years ago he thought he was being punished because he had to leave his classmates to attend these special classes. But with the help and understanding of his wonderful teaching Mrs. Terry Genther, special ed class, became something that made learning much easier and more enjoyable for my son. And it was nice to know that my son was getting the help he needed.
My son has improved in leaps and bounds mentally and scholastically. So can someone tell me if these students are excluded what happens, another downfall in my son’s and other childrens hopes and dreams for becoming the very best they can be? I would hate to think that even one child’s education would be put in jeopardy only to save a few dollars. I mean, isn’t it all about education?
