Extension Afent

4-H is the youth development program of Cooperative Extension. 4-H is an informal education program based on the needs and interests of youth. f Young people, ages 5 to 19 have a variety Of ways to join 4-H. In Rappahannock County we have 4-H Cloverbud Clubs for children 5 to 8 and both project clubs and community clubs for children and teens ages 9 to 19.

The Cloverbud Club offers an introduction to 4-H. They meet monthly for an educational program, workshop or field trip with an adult volunteer leader and parents. We have two 4-H Cloverbud Clubs: Hazel Zinn-Day is the leader for the Washington club which meets at 3 p.m. on the third Saturday at the Extension Office. In September they made Indian Dream Catchers and learned the legend about them.

This fall we are organizing a new 4-H Cloverbud Club in Flint Hill under the leadership of Rosalie Laught. Their meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 will be a program on apples and making cider in a small apple press.

Community and Project Clubs

Community clubs meet in homes or public buildings and offer programs, leadership training, and conduct community service projects.

Project clubs meet monthly with their volunteer leaders and concentrate on one project, i.e. livestock, gardening, etc.

4-H Livestock Club: meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday at the Extension Office. Their focus is large animals: beef, sheep and swine. Randall and Toni Updike and Jim Massie Jr., are club leaders. 1 4-H Junior Garden Club: meets from 3:30-5 p.m. on the fourth Monday at the Extension Office. It is cosponsored by the adult Rappahannock County Garden Club and Cooperative Extension. Carolyn Emerick is their leader. They will be studying about gardening, flower arranging, nature and related topics.

4-H Horse and Pony Club: d new 4-H Horse and Pony Club is being organized for 1994-95 under the leadersip of Heather Marsh and Diana Corbin. If you are ages 9-19 and are interested call Ms. Marsh at 9879545 or Mrs. Corbin at 547-3452 or the Extension Office at 675-3619.
