tal retardation services to residents of the county, and is a program of the Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Center based in Culpeper. Mr. Rafala said, “We provide as good a service as people can get anywhere.” All visits with counselors are strictly confidential, and if a client would rather make an appointment at the Fauquier or Culpeper clinic, they may be referred to one of those clinics.
The services available through the Rappahannock clinic are intake evaluations, an initial interview to pinpoint problem areas; individual counseling; psychiatric evaluation; medication management, with a psychiatrist who can prescribe and review medications; substance abuse evaluation; crisis intervention; family counseling; and group counseling. The clinic’s staff is also available to provide education to county organizations, and can arrange for psychological testing and evaluation.
Mr. Rafala said that many clients come into the clinic who are substance abusers, and the counselors work with them to overcome their problems. Many are also depressed, possibly suicidal, and some are sexually abused. He said, “Some people are afraid they will come here and be sent off to Western State, but that is not the case.”
Many times clients’ fees will be paid by their insurance company, Medicare or Medicaid, though Mr. Rafala said that insurance companies have been cutting mental health benefits recently. If fees are not covered by insurance, a sliding scale of fee payments is available. Clients are usually seen for one hour at a time, and the fee ranges from $5 to $75.
