The Smithsonian at Little Washington concert series brings some rarely-heard music to the Theatre at Washington at 3:30 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 4. The work to be heard is “The Fantasies for Viols,” by Henry Purcell, who is acknowledged to be one of England’s greatest composers. It will be performed by the Smithsonian Chamber Players.
Purcell lived from 1659-1695, and this concert marks the 300th anniversary of the composer’s death. The concert will be preceded at 3 p.m. by a talk from Kenneth Slowik, artistic director and a founding member of the Smithsonian Chamber Players, on “Henry Purcell and Restoration England.”
Kenneth Slowik, who will join the award-winning Smithsonian Chamber Players in the performance of this music for four violas da gamba, is music director of the Smithsonian Institution’s chamber music program at the National Museum of American History. He is conductor of the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra and also serves as cellist with he Smithson String Quartet and the Castle Trio.
