His predecessor was a vegetarian, which is a little tricky in a city that has no vegetables. All I ban is mayonnaise, and Aida is very sweet, she always says: “Sorry, Deedee,” when she helps herself to some.

As you can see, things are so slow we can devote our energies to thinking of food. The cease-fire is holding in Sarajevo, and I have been going for daily strolls up the icy hillsides, and the occasional slide down them. But politics are no less nasty, with both sides refusing to live up to various aspects of the peace agreement. There was gas every other day in the city, which meant Sarajevans were warm for 24 hours, then frozen for 24 hours. But yesterday the Serbs apparently turned off the valves, which are in their territory, and it has been chilly since. It is 9 below, and a lot of people only have plastic sheeting for windowpanes. Luckily we have emergency power in our office.

My replacement is due to arrive here Saturday 28th, and 1 will leave the next day and make my way home. 1 cannot stand the guy and have to finish all the Christmas wine before he arrives because 1 refuse to leave him any, so we have it with every meal. Everyone gossips about everyone here, so we are concocting some good stories the crew can tell him about me when I am gone.
