Irritates
To the Editor:
I am incensed, by the cartoon in the Jan, 8 Rappahannock News: the container labeled “Special Ed” appears to be to be a waste basket. 1 find it difficult to believe that an artist who could make the smaller container look so much like a pail or bucket would have a great deal of difficulty making the larger look like one-if that was her intention.
As it appeared, the cartoon would seem to indicate that funds going to special ed are just being thrown away. As the parent of a child benefitting greatly from special ed services, 1 resent the implication that my child’s program and therefore my child are worthless! It is also an insult to the dedicated and hard-working special ed teachers and implies that their ingenuity, compassion and special training are being wasted.
Then there was the relative size of the containers. That seemed to imply that special ed was getting, what, four or five timgs what “the rest” received? According to the recent article in the Rappahannock News, special ed was, in fact, getting an amount proportionate to “the rest.”
I sincerely hope the artist’s life is never personally touched by accident or illness leading to a need for special education, but some compassion for those with needful children would not be out of line.
