Special Education v
It should be possible to discuss, or graphically represent, the costs of special education without being accused of being- in opposition to the children needing these services or the dedicated teachers who work with them.
And yes, a full discussion of special education should include its successes as well as its cost. There have indeed been successes. Two young women, who came up through special education classes at the elementary school and high school are working at the Faith Mountain company in its mail room.
One of the reasons there are more special education teachers and classes at the elementary school than at the high school is that some of the children benefit enough from the various programs at the elementary school so they need less in the way of special services in high school. Students who have required a self-contained special education classroom may gradually be able to make use of the services of a resource teacher for only part of the day and may eventually progress to the point when a special education teacher occasionally monitors their progress in regular classes.
Very little of the time of the two speech teachers is spent with high school students because most of these problems are corrected in the elementary school.
