There are many alternatives to alcoholic beverages. A responsible host or hostess should offer at least one non-alcoholic drink at a party for guests who choose not to drink. These include: tomato juice, fruit juices, club soda, mineral water, tonic water, cola, ginger ale, sparkling cider, cider, coffee and tea. Remember that just plan old iced water with a slice of lemon or line can be very refreshing!

Duties of Host or Hostess

Here are some guidelines that responsible hosts and hostesses should follow:

A: If alcoholic drinks are served to guests, be sure to offer them an alternative non-alcoholic beverage, especially if they are driving home.

B: Be sure guests who are drinking alcoholic beverages have arranged for a designated driver to take them home. If not, take the car keys away from any guest who attempts to drive when under the influence.

G: When alcoholic drinks are served, also have a food buffet or snacks. Food slows the rate of alcohol absorption in the stomach. High protein and carbohydrate foods, such as meat and cheeses, are especially good snacks.
