Aft£Hjplfcid'ng numerous hours last week discussing the concept of charter schools in Virginia, the House Education Committee on Monday killed the two proposals dealing with this issue.
While a relatively new concept, charter schools would be public schools that were allowed to create programs and be free of many state regulations.
The schools’ objectives would have to be stated in a charter, or contract, granted by the local schools board.
Although the committee killed Gov. George Allen’s plan as introduced by Del.. Jay Katzen (R-31st District) with a voice vote, it did consider more heavily an alternate proposal by Del. Phillip A. Hamilton, RNewport News.
Del. Hamilton’s proposal later was killed 12-9. It called for testing a charter school in Portsmouth, an area where the local school board and the superintendent support the charterschool concept.
