The cash register is the original too. Mrs. Mills always remembers it being there, though Mr. Utz did use a drawer for the cash before getting the newfangled cash register,
The store had gas pumps until 1989, when the Mills decided not to replace them because of the high cost. Mrs. Mills recalls the old gas pumps in 1934, “I sat out there many a time and watched him (Mr. Utz) pump the gas."
Mrs. Mills said that local farmer Chris Parrish calls Mills Store “the information center.” He said that Mrs. Mills also serves as a kind of local psychologist, that people go to her for help with their problems.
The store is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and on Sundays from 7 a.m, to 12:30 or 1:00, to sell Sunday newspapers. It is located on Route 729, just before the Culpeper County line.
