The School Board asked Superintendent David Gangel to include all his priorities in the budget he is preparing for next year.
These would add about S690.000 to the current budget, an almost 12 percent increase, and require about 11.5 cents more to the tax rate.
Included would be a 5 percent increase to teacher salaries, salary increases to bring administrator’s salaries closer to the state average, an additional high school teacher certified in Spanish and eighth grade science, a school nurse to be split between the two schools, increasing the school psychologist from a 60 percent position to 100 percent and a similar increase for the art teacher, a consultant to study high school expansion, perhaps leading to increased vocational offerings at the high school and less reliance on George Washington CarverPiedmont Technical School, a computer coordinator-grant writer, a part time coordinator of volunteers, and an additional $25,000 for maintenance and repairs.
About $84,500 is required by law for special education, including another teacher for the preschool handicapped, an aide to work with that teacher, extending the school psychologist’s position, a part-time job coach to prepare high school special education students for entering the job market, and providing extended year services for those special education students who
