The school system tried to hire another teacher for the pre-school handicapped this year, wh(^h the class grew to one more student that is allowed. Dr. Gangel reported that no applicants were certified for that program. He has received a waiver for the rest of this year with a substitute hired to be a third adult in the classroom.
Another $7,680 is required because of agreements with the Water and Sewer Authority to share a plant operator and agreements with Piedmont Tech. In addition Df Gangel estimated that operating the elementary school addition will add about $20,000 to utility bills.
$9,500 is included to provide lights in the high school parking lot. Dr. Gangel also included $12,500 to put aides on three buses to see if that helps with discipline.
Stonewall-Hawthorn District representative John foie said the board members really need to learn which of these recommendations are important to the public. “It’s hard to say that any of this is not worthy,” he said, "but when you add it all up, it is too much.”
Chairman Beverly Massie said it may be possible near the end of this year to go ahead and buy some of the things on the list, thus reducing the need for a tax increase, but most of the things on the list can’t be handled that way.
