He assured the student that charter schools, which are to undergo a one-year study in Virginia, will “in no way” become schools for children for elite families.
The students from Rappahannock County spending the day at the Capitol included Mike Wolfe, Mark Jenkins, Nancie Gallegos, Matt Payne, Dawn Havstad and Christie Keys.
The group agreed that the main purpose of their trip was to leam more about state government and the legislators from their areas.
“I wanted to have a better understanding, of how bills are passed," Mark Jenkins said, adding that he likes Del. Katzen because he seems honest and sincere about issues.
Nancie Gallegos agreed, saying Del. Katzen seems as if he really cqres about students and education in general.
“This is a good opportunity to see government in action,” she said, explaining that it’s hard to understand the process of government without watching it firsthand.
