Simultaneously, Governor Allen works to weaken and destroy environmental regulations and a leading survey shows Americans want a healthy environment and place a high priority on it. Roper Starch Worldwide surveyed nation-wide a cross-section of adults. “How far have environmental laws and regulations gone?” Fiftythree percent said “not far enough,” 23 percent said “about the right balance,” and only 16 percent said “too far.” Can environmental protection and economic protection go hand-inhand? “Yes” responded 66 percent, with terms of environmentalism?” 79 percent said active or sympathetic, 16 percent neutral, and two percent unsympathetic.
Results of the survey make it clear voters did not send anyone to Richmond or to D.C. to declare war on the environment. Those who use a code word like “wise-up” have their otvn agenda—reap all they can as fast as they can without thinking of anything besides short term profits.
Americans put in time and spent their own money to bring in regulations that brought back sparkling waters and cleaner air. Grants for town sewage treatment plants helped clean rivers and the Bay. Safeguarding our water resources form pollution from factories and auto emissions is a high priority of Americans. Acid rain is one of the problems in Virginia. Songbirds are not hatching in the Netherlands because acid rain kills snails—the source of calcium for strong eggshells and bones. We don’t want that. Citizen-voters appreciate what we have and care enough to carry the message to their legislators to ensure environmental protection. Americans will not step back 100 years.
