Dr. Gangel said it is equally important to look at the program as a way to offer job preparation to more students who are not involved in the programs at Piedmont because the time lost in travel makes it impossible for them to take all the classes they want.
The board heard a presentation by art teacher Harriet Rosenblatt in support of full-time funding for her position. She noted that art is supported by Goals 2000 as equally important to academic subjects. She said art education can improve students scores on basic skills.
She noted that at the elementary school kindergarten, first, third and fourth graders are taught art by teachers' aides, while a music teacher teaches second-grade art. “It is inappropriate to think that an untrained individual, no matter how dedicated, could take the place of a trained individual,” she said.
In other action the board:
• Approved a dance for this weekend sponsored by the SCA to raise money for an orphanage in Uganda.
• Approved using the Chestnut Forks tennis club for the after-prom party.
• Approved a bid of $73,873 for two new school buses for next year.
• Heard a presentation by sixth grade teachers on their curriculum.
