It is with great pleasure that Hospice of the Rapidan announces its 1994 Volunteer of the Year, Mr. Sid Gottlieb. Sid has been involved with Hospice of the Rapidan for 11 years, tn the capacity of volunteer, he has provided compassion and comfort to the dying and their families.
Sid lives in Boston with his wife Margaret. He is the proud father of four and the even prouder grandfather of eight. Asked why he joined the organization he said, “I was drawn to the work the minute I heard about it. I don’t know why, but there was no question it was something I wanted to do.” And he has done it well. Sid’s compassion, commitment and reliability have made an immeasurable contribution to Hospice.
Volunteer Coordinator Paula Gray Stafford speaks very highly of the volunteer of the year, “Sid is a wonderful person and an amazing volunteer. Our paths have crossed many times in many different arenas since we moved to Culpeper nine years ago. It just seems very natural to be working with him now.” She continued, “I am always struck by Sid’s ability to get to the essence of a person very quickly and respectfully. That ability helps a lot when you are working with families in crisis. 1 think it is where he does his best work. His quiet poise helps alleviate a lot of anxiety for everyone involved.”
“The world opened up to me when I ran away from New York,” Sid says, “I found country life at school in Arkansas and decided it was for me.” Sid then moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he got a degree in Agriculture from the University of
