From Black Schools
To Integration
Last Friday’s program at the library on black schools in the county prior to integration was a stark reminder that while much has been gained, much also has been lost.
Against terrible odds, parents of black students and their teachers united to see that those children were educated. Working in tiny school buildings, usually lacking central heat, often lacking plumbing, students gained a strong background that prepared them for many successes.
A similar program featuring white schools of the same era would, no doubt, produce many similar comments, but the black parents, teachers and students had additional burdens.
If black parents wanted schools for their children they usually had to find funding sources and build the buildings themselves. But that effort also meant that those schools were very precious to them.
The teachers and children had to beg used desks and books from white schools, but they were not abused.
