He said he also attended the school in Christiansburg for three weeks. Later he attended the boarding school at Manassas and the Hampton Institute. He also served in the Army. “My accomplishments do not include a degree,” he said, “But I do believe I have a degree of accomplishments.”
Ethyl Bailey said one of her daughters decided she did not want to attend either Criser High School in Front Royal or George Washington Carver. “She integrated Rappahannock High by herself,” Mrs. Bailey said. “She had a hard time.” Mrs. Bailey said the students spit on her daughter and she had to eat in the bathroom to keep from having food thrown at her. In February or March she became sick. Tests at the UVa Hospital indicated it was because of the stress she was under, so she did not return to school that year. The next year she had a friend with her, and the following year “They all had to go.”
Dorothy Butler talked about being a teacher when integration came to the public schools. She said during the summer she was asked to be a teacher’s aide with a white teacher, Dorothy Spicer. She felt somewhat insulted at first, but had a wonderful summer. During the next school year, she team taught with Elsie Dodson. She said when that class graduated, she received 20 invitations to their graduation.
The following year the elementary school opened, and she taught another 18 years.
James Russell then told about the purchase of land for the high school. His father owned the land, he said, and wanted to keep it for his sons. In „ 1945 the School Board offered him $1,000 for 20 acres, and told him if he didn’t sell they would condemn the land, and he probably would get less for it. He sold it. The Brown vs the Board Supreme Court decision was vindication, he said, because eventually black children would attend school on the land taken from his father. “The mills of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceeding fine,” he said.
