Amid scurrying to wrap up legislation dealing with the budget, Del. Jay Katzen, R-31st District took time to explain the process to about 50 high school students visiting the state Capitol.
Del. Katzen visited with students from Warren, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties, speaking about topics ranging from charter schools to the extension service.
The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service is an important topic to the students, who were in Richmond for 4-H Ambassador Day. They are members of the 4-H Clubs ip their areas. A cut in funding could mean fewer services for these groups.
Del. Katzen told the students the General Assembly plans to restore a substantial portion of the funding to the extension service.
The House added S12.3 million, and the Senate $10.3 million to the extension service and Agriculture research. The differences in the Senate and House proposals, he said, must be resolved by Feb. 25 in a conference committee.
In addition, Del. Katzen said one of his main priorities is education.
