The Washington Town Council voted unanimously to raise the basic water rate by $2 per month and the rates for water use over 3,000 gallons per month by 10 cents per 100 gallons.
The increase will take effect the month after the town receives the new loan-grant package for further expansion. Mayor Stewart Willis and town attorney Frank Reynolds said that could be as early as April or perhaps May.
The major purpose of the rate increase is to pay back the debt for a new $75,000 loan. An equal $75,000 grant will be received also. This new package will pay to extend new lines on both ends of Main Street.
During the public hearing on the issue Mayor Willis released a preliminary water works budget for next year showing expenses of $44,935 for fiscal 1996, compared to a current budget of $40,100. The new rates are designed to raise $45,500.
Current water rates are $10 per month for the first 3,000 gallons, 30 cents per 100 gallons for between 3,000 and 10,000 gallons, and 40 cents per 100 gallons for over 10.000 gallons.
