Nearly 150 years old, the Sperryville Comer Store is probably the oldest country store in Rappahannock County.
During most of its earlier years, the store was known as the E.M. Schwartz Store.
Owner Randolph Clater still keeps a lot of old mementos from the store, including old charge books from 1876. He proudly showed them, and all charges are written in the book in beautiful calligraphy. Many of the names are familiar today: Fletcher,, Rudasill, and Miller.
He reminisces about Sperryville years ago. He remembers when the Emporium was the elementary school. He himself graduated from the Washington School in 1958. Other mementos are many due bills, coins for many different amounts, which were given to customers who brought in items to barter for goods, such as chickens.
Randolph Clater and his wife Dorothy run the store along with their daughter Pam, his sister Peggy Wayland, and Roger Jenkins. The Claters have owned the store for nine
