Hopewell Baptist Church in Sperryville is proud to announce their new Pastor-elect, Rev. Henry A. Townes.
Rev. Townes of Rapidan is a son of the late Linton F. and Ida G. Townes. He is a native of Clarksville, Mecklenburg County. He received his public education in the schools Mecklenburg County and was graduate from Saint Paul’s College, Lawrenceville and the School of Theology, Virginia Union University, Richmond.
He was ordained to the Christian ministry by the Third Union Baptist Church, King William in 1956. He served as pastor of Gethsamane and Bethany Baptist Church in King William and West Point, respectively.
During July, 1960, Rev. Townes assumed the Pastoral leadership of the Pine Street Baptist Church, Covington where he served for 30 years. He also served as pastor of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Low Moor, Va. from 1983-1989.
Since moving to Rapidan in August 1990 he has united with the Pilgrim Baptist Church, Mitchell where he presently serves as Associate Minister.
Rev. Townes is married to the former Miss Susie P. Scott of Rapidan who retired in 1987 from the Covington City Schools after 25 years
