On a 3 to 2 vote the supervisors approved a motion to close the dumpsters at Huntly and Scrabble as soon as possible but definitely by June 30. .
It took three tries Monday afternoon for J ’Hampton District representative Mike Massie to formulate a motion that could gamer the needed three votes, but an amendment to also eliminate * tipping fees for commercial haulers persuaded Piedmont District representative Charles K. "Pete” Estes to join Mr. Massie and Jackson 'District representative Ron Frazier in the vote.
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson and Wakefield District represehtative Hubert Qilkey voted against the motion. The Huntly dumpster site is in Mr. Gilkey’s district. The Scrabble site is in Mr. Anderson’s.
The Board of Supervisors later voted to have the landfill near AmissviHe open seven days a week once the dumpster sites are closed.
Mr. Massie originally moved to close the Huntly site March 15 and to close the Scrabble site July t unless it was fenced and manned. His motion also included a requirement that County Administrator john McCarthy bring to the March meeting an estimate of the cost of providing a trash truck to go on Saturdays to Chester Gap to pick up trash. Mr. Massie said he would support the trash truck only if it cost less than keeping the Huntly site open. Mr. McCarthy was also supposed to bring a recommendation for new hours at the landfill which Was to be open seven days a week.
Mr. Gilkey questioned providing a trash truck only in Chester Gap. “What would you do about the people in Flint Hill, in Washington?” Mr. Gilkey asked.
Mr. Massie said they could go to the landfill; He acknowledged that it is a long way from Chester Gap to the landfill, and said the trash truck would be a way to ease their situation until a'central site for a compactor is opened, ' vv *' < f t *‘I don’t think we will find a central Site until l the dumpsters are shut down,” Mr. Massie said. “We’ve been lucky nobody has been hurt.” He said there are problems with fires in the dump
