Cheers rang out from the Washington Fire Hall this past Saturday, Feb. 3, as Cub Scout Pack 123’s 1996 Pinewood Derby, races got underway.
Dozens of scouts and their families gathered at the hall despite several inches of snow which had fallen the night before. Postponed once due to the January blizzard, the excellent turnout at Saturday’s Derby was especially encouraging to Cub Scout leaders.
The check-in tables were busy as all entries were weighed and measured to make sure they conformed to the required specifications. The owners of underweight cars were given the option of adding weight to their entries to help speed them down the track. As each car was added to the tables in the “pit area” the array of colorful and creative paint jobs and body styles became increasingly impressive. A lot of thought, time and effort was put into this year’s derby racers.
A small group of Tiger Cub scouts led off the races, followed by larger fields of racers in the Wolf and Bear dens. The Webelos 1 and 11 racers brought the total number of derby cars to thirty-four, a much larger turnout than for the 1995 races.
