As always, I am tom by the necessity to ignore the majority of the exhibitors and their works in the interest of writing an acceptably brief notice. 1 urge gallery visitors to look more than once and to look long at what we are lucky to have on show. There are two other pieces I would especially commend. Tom Spande’s oil on wood, “The Quarry,” excites with its gay colors, red and green, and the strong shadows of the swimming hole scene. There are subtle colors in the rocks and abstract shapes throughout that are brought together in a way that indicate continuing growth and depth in Mr. Spande’s art.
“Founder and Model,” a pastel of a sleeping dog and a sitting figure in a room, shows June Jordan’s dedication to, her work at its best. Remarkable colors and interesting composition put one on notice of the extent to which a small picture can have a compelling impact. This is an outstanding picture.
Some of the sculptures as well as most of the pictures in this exhibition call for close looking. Leaving the gallery and driving home through a snow-filled landscape’ left me exhilarated. The gallery was full of fantasy, creativity and individuality. The countryside, stark, sensuous and glorious — each a complement to the other.
