Mike Massie noted that when the county first started considering a sludge ban they were'told sludge could only be applied every five years, but now farmers are allowed to have it applied every year at the rate of 50 tons of wet sludge per acre oh land that will be used to grow com. He said that could lead to a large buildup of heavy metals.
Mr. McCarthy reported that Del. Katzen’s bill to exempt the county from the state law that overturned the county’s ban on mobile homes except in mobile home parks was defeated. Del. Katzen’s bill to exempt the county from having to provide voting machines passed the House of Delegates 100 to 0 and will be considered by the State Senate.
A new concern, he said was House Bill 70 that would put the county and many other counties under the provisions of the Chesapeake Bay Act. That could lead to many new burdensome regulations, he said. Up to now the act has only covered counties to the east of Interstate 95, Mr. McCarthy said. -
Chairman Gilkey said, “That could create havoc in Rappahannock County.”
