Dumpsters Again
The decision by the Board of Supervisors to close the dumpster sites at Huntly and Scrabble without providing a convenient alternative is likely to come back to haunt the county.
Not only is it likely to lead to increased roadside dumping gradually eroding Rappahannock’s beauty, but combined with the decision to eliminate the tipping fee for commercial haulers, it is not even likely to achieve the objective of eliminating out of county trash being put in the landfill.
For years the supervisors have claimed that the dumpster sites, which are open and available 24 hours a day, are attractive to residents of surrounding counties. The Huntly site is convenient to people from Warren County and Fauquier County, and Scrabble is convenient for Culpeper residents.
However, with tipping fees being charged in surrounding counties but not in Rappahannock, commercial haulers have every reason to seek to bring out of county trash in.
There is a penalty for that. They can be banned from the landfill for a year, but to do that they have to be caught. Who is going to randomly search through bags of trash to find mail for someone who lives outside Rappahannock County? If such mail is found, can the hauler who dumped it at the landfill be identified?
