What a mighty tree is the Sycamore, the most massive deciduous tree in North America. The great redwoods of the West Coast are “evergreens. A Sycamore cannot compete with them for height, circumference or age; one giant Sequoia is estimated to be 3,800 years old!
Our eastern Sycamore, or more accurately, American Sycamore, can attain an age of 600 years. That is enough time for me to contemplate. A Sycamore can attain a height of 170 feet and a diameter of 14 feet or more. In 1770 George Washington, wrote, in his diary of a Sycamore with a circumference of 45 feet.
