With one project left to be done to repair damage from the June 27 flood the county is again applying for federal government assistance to repair damage from the flooding of Jan. 18 and 19 when rain combined with snow melt to again cause severe problems in Harris Hollow.
Furthermore County Administrator John McCarthy told the Board of Supervisors Monday those areas where the federal government turned down stream bed projects requested after the June floods were precisely the areas that caused problems in January.
' Mr. McCarthy said, “It’s going to continue to happen every time there is a 10-year flood.”
Mr. McCarthy said the bids on the final project, on Battle Run near the recently replaced Route 729 bridge, will be opened this week.
VDOT resident engineer Robert Moore said the highway department will be applying for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for repair work caused by the most recent flooding. He said if it is not approved the cost will have to come out of road maintenance money. That repair work cost 4190,000, he said. >
Jim Marangoni, deputy emergency services coordinator, reported on a meeting with VDOT officials after the special supervisors meeting following the blizzard. He said VDOT had agreed to add a southern route through the county to the list of priority roads to be cleared in a blizzard or following an ordinary snow such as the county had this past weekend.
