Last year’s parental notification bill never left the committee, and Gov. George Allen vetoed a similar bill in 1994.
HOV Lanes
Violators of the high-occupancy vehicle lanes on interstate highways will face stiffer penalties if the legislature has its way.
A bill that promotes car pooling and deter drivers from illegally using the HOV lanes is headed for the Senate floor.
The bill would raise the $50 fine limit to $100 for second-time offenders and to $150 and for third-time offenders. Each successive violation would increase $50.
Third-time offenders also would see a demerit mark on their records, while fourth violation would cause
^three demerit marks.
“As long as 1 have been in the legislature and as many bills as I have put in, the passage of this bill will probably give me more personal satisfaction than any other piece of legislation,” said the patron of the bill, Warren E. Barry, R-Fairfax.
Drug Seizures
Col. M. Wayne Huggins of the Virginia State Police reported that three of the largest drug seizures in the state’s history occuiTed in 1995. These seizures involved 400 to 500 • pounds of cocaine and 750 pounds of marijuana.
He told the House Committee on Militia and Police that all of his troopers are receiving training to help them spot signs of drug trafficking. — By CAPITAL NEWS SERVICE
