“One Square Foot” is a juried exhibition of miniature works of regional artists, on display for February at the Middle Street Gallery. By organizing a show of small pieces, the gallery challenges us to pay attention and think. '
Rene Ruffner has painted three arresting surrealistic pictures using acrylic and oil on canvas and wood, each quite different from the other. In one, purple mountains are arrayed before a light orange sky. In their midst, a blood red cloth holds a silver and gold cup. This image is entitled “Apparition.” A mythological or religious picture, with its power and starkness, it leaves a photographic image on the viewer’s mind.
His “Le Renard et Le Lion” shows these animals facing one another in a cave. The view is from the back of the cave across the animals to the opening on water, and far beyond, at the horizon, we glimpse an island or a city. Mr. Ruffner asks the viewer to consider the meaning of these "creatures, how they arrived at their situation and what is likely to happen.
