The evolving attendance policy and policies on hiring athletic coaches came under attack from people in the audience at the School Board meeting Tuesday evening.
Kim Baader and Bill Payne continued their attack on the attendance policy. Mrs. Baader said although the policy now says that if a parent calls the school before 10 a.m. reporting her son dr daughter is sick, attendance will not reduce the grade by a letter, the grade can still be reduced numerically, and calling the school is difficult because the number is frequently busy.
Mr. Payne wanted the policy to allow for taking the student out of school for family trips without having his grade affected.
Assistant superintendent Mary Ann Biggs reported that the new policy has reduced the number of absences dramatically. Last year there were 418 absences in August and September. This year that had dropped to 286, she said. Tardiness has also been reduced from 142 last year to 84 this year.
"We are accomplishing our goals," she said.. "Teachers feel higher level things are going on with more students in attendance."
