4-H Horse and Pony Club — This club meets on the first Wednesday afternoon, 3:30 to 5 p.m. under the leadership of Diana Corbin and several other parents. Club members learn about care, health, safety, showing and judging of horses. Several members participated in the 4-H District and Farm Show horse shows in 1996.

4-H Livestock Club — This club meets on the third Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Extension Office to study large animal breeds of sheep, swine and beef cattle. Each member raises one or more animals to show at spring and summer livestock shows.

They also participate in the 4-H Stockman's, Livestock Judging, and Block and Bridle contests at Virginia Tech. Randall Updike, Jim Massie, and Tommy Williams are 4-H leaders.

4-H Junior Garden Club — This club is co-sponsored by the Rappahannock County Garden Club and Extension Office and is for children 9 and older. Members study gardening, flower arranging, birds, butterflies, and related topics. Carolyn Emerick is the leader.

4-H Wildlife Birding Club — Dr. Joe Garvin and Sue Benner, 4-H leaders, are planning a monthly field trip or meeting for this year. Check with them at 987-7206 for exact dates and details. They are studying non-game birds, habitat for birds and wildlife, bats and plan to participate in Earth Day in April.

They have received a 4-H minigrant or $300 for Bat Farming for the 1996-97 4-H year. This will involve learning about the ecological importance of bats and their vital role as consumers of agricultural pests and constructing bat houses to place in the county. If your children are interested in this project, contact Dr. and Mrs. Garvin or the Extension Office.
