water from the elementary school washes onto her land. She said now that the school has more property, it should fix the problem. She said her brother Mike Brown and neighbor Roy Leake also have problems because of drainage from the elementary school.
Dr. Gangel said he would ask Robert Moore from VDOT to talk to the board about the problem in November. Mrs. Butler asked to be invited to attend the meeting.
The board heard presentations by students and teachers on how students learn to become fluent at extemporaneous speaking. Marty Cannon reported there is no problem getting kindergarteners to speak extemporaneously. Other teachers report that speaking is incorporated with reading and class discussion.
Student Jennifer Thomas challenged the School Board to speak extemporaneously by asking each a question and giving them 30 seconds to answer.
Dr. Tole said people must be able to give a favorable impression of themselves in about 30 seconds. He noted that this is a skill that standardized tests cannot measure.
The board approved field trips and fund raisers for the year.
Dr. Gangel gave the board a draft of a proposal to use Saturdays as school make up days so time missed can be made up before tests are given.
The board approved a dress code to be used at both schools. Jackson District representative Ron Makela voted against it because he said it was not specific enough. The policy outlaws clothes with logos depicting drug, tobacco or alcohol products or presenting messages that would be offensive to any group. Otherwise it specifies that clothing should not cause a disruption.
The board approved contracts for cleaning ,the high school in the evening and the School Board office.
