To the Editor:
I would like to address those who may still be undecided about who to vote for in the upcoming presidential and congressional elections, and to offer what I think are critical reasons for supporting Democratic candidates Bill Clinton, Mark Warner, and Bob Weinberg.
There are three fundamental issues on which the Democrats have a strong philosophy and record of support and which the Republicans have actively undermined: protection of the environment, support of public education, and assurance of a human services "safety net" for the most vulnerable individuals and families.
Having worked for 20 years for a local agency which serves the elderly and persons with mental disabilities, I am acutely aware of the difficult situations which face many individuals and families. In this community there are older people who have worked hard all of their lives in low paying jobs, who could not manage now without the assistance provided through Medicaid, food stamps, Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income. There are grandparents and single mothers taking care of young children, for whom the now defunct AFDC program has been their economic lifeline. There are people with physical and mental disabilities who can only live in and be a part of our community with assistance.
