before going out to dinner and returning to their motel. There they met members of several other teams down for the invitational meet.
On Saturday there were 10 races — three at various levels for boys' varsity, three at various levels for girls' varsity, two boys' JV, one girls JV and one for freshmen boys.
On the varsity level, Coach van de Graaff chose to enter his teams in the C division. "I felt this would put them on competition with schools of comparable size and talent." It must have worked because the girls finished 15th out of 32 teams and the boys 20th out of 40.
Among the girls Meghan Fairbrother won a medal for finishing 9th. „
There were 114 teams total in the competition and 2,800 runners. Among the boys Chris Sause was in the top 30.
"It was awesome," Coach van de Graaff said. "Almost everybody had a personal best time." He said that being constantly in with other runners in a large field pushes his runners to improve. "They had 200 to 300 kids lined up at the start of each race; the colors were brilliant." The terrain was varied. It had hills but not extremely steep ones, and it passed through woods for a portion. The finish was clearly in sight from one half mile out., Coach van de Graaff said.
"The kids walked away really. believing in themselves, knowing they can do better. Their confidence level is really high."
The teams were scheduled to compete at Page County this Wednesday and at Luray next Wednesday before returning home to host the District meet on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
