Assembly gave the Isaac Walton League funds so now he can go out and train others to monitor streams. "Now I can go out and preach the gospel of clean water. This is the fifth group this year," he said.

He is hoping this leads to a statewide network of groups monitoring Virginia's waters. He uses the "biological" method, but he said it should be supplemented with chemical analyses and systematic observation. It is important to develop methods that will produce results acceptable to state agencies, he said.

He said streams should be monitored four times a year and ideally three months apart.

He suggested the group also use data collected by various other groups including universities and the Game Commission. He said there is "an unhappy controversy between agriculture and conservationists. As long as these conflicts are exploited,, both are losers and polluters are the winners. I wasted a couple of years being angry. I learned not to be angry, be inclusive. It's more fun and more effective."

The biological method depends on counting and identifying the insects and crustaceans that live in the stream.

Following lunch, the group moved to the site on the Thornton River and selected a particular location. A three foot square of a fine mesh seine was put on the bottom over rocks, and the rocks were systematically moved over the seine and rubbed so the little "critters" that live on them were captured in the seine.

Back on the bank, the insects were identified and put into water filled ice cube trays.
