The Soil and Water
Conservation Districts in the Rappahannock Watershed have joined together to protect the Rappahannock River and its tributaries. The districts will coordinate a volunteer water quality monitoring network to enhance current state monitoring efforts.
Are you willing to volunteer four hours a month? Sampling will include physical and chemical analysis of the water. Twice a month, volunteers will test pH, dissolved oxygen, air and water temperature, and water depth. Observations of physical characteristics like water flow, water color, weather, and wildlife will also be recorded. Once a month, volunteers will collect samples that will be picked up and analyzed by a lab for fecal coliform, nitrate, nitrite, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total suspended solids.
