Scientist George Washington Carver, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, poet Paul Dunbar, singer Roland Hayes, Olympic star Jesse Owens, concert pianist and composer Philippa Schuyler and founder of the Blood Bank, Charles Drew, were some of the people Warner noted.
Warner said he was surprised that the children did not recognized Douglas Wilder’s name. “People (outside of Virginia) think Virginia is so backward, segregationist and generally racist, but they don’t recognize that Virginia is the first state that elected a black governor. Virginia has its problems. There are people in the state who are dyed in the wool segregationists, there are problems in the county, problems the county doesn’t understand,” he said.
Warner was bom in 1928 in Scrabble and attended the Scrabble Elementary School which was a half mile from his home. Upon entering seventh grade he attended the public schools in the District of Columbia and served as a combat soldier in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. For his bravery as a machine gunner corporal he was decorated with a number of medals, the most distinguished being the Purple Heart.
