SPERRYVILLE — Putting aside any thoughts of her personal tragedy, for about 10 minutes anyway, rider Jill Waterman booted home the winners of two timber races at Saturday’s Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point.
Waterman, who, lost 10 of her best racehorses in training — reportedly including two of last year’s Virginia champions — in a devastating Upperville barn fire Feb. 16, accepted her first two 1998 mounts from friend and Piedmont Fox Hounds’ whipper-in Robin Rounseville and from her former trainer Donald Yovanovich. To the delight of not only Waterman, Rounseville and Yovanovich, but all attending the Thornton Hill Farm races, both horses won for the talented jockey, convincingly.
Her first mount was in the four-horse ladies’ timber. Tenyear-old veteran Leonative led from throughout, turning back a stretch rally from secondplaced Duke Kahana Moku. Though Duke had won the 1994 running of the two-anda-half-mile event, Waterman had owned the Mount Salem trophy for the past three years, winning from 19951997 aboard Ky. Mint Julep.
