For Jan Makela, a self-described “professional volunteer,” the opportunity to direct the county’s public school volunteer program is a mission of the heart. Due in large part to Makela’s leadership, enthusiasm, and intense recruiting, the county boasts more than 100 active volunteers participating in high school and elementary school programs.
Quick to share credit and generous with praise, Makela is widely appreciated for her work on behalf of the children. Sitting at a desk littered with notes from teachers needing help on special projects, Makela’s wide-open manner makes it tough for even hardened professionals to turn her away. “My attitude is to take anyone for anything,” she said, smiling broadly. “Even an hour one day a week helps.”
