combine two professions. Garvin, a veterinary technician, brought a live rooster to her Fun Friday class, teaching both about animals and drawing. Architectural designer Beth Hilscher’s project showed children how to design their own dream bedrooms. Portrait artist and children’s book illustrator Ned Bittinger sketched a charcoal portrait of one Fun Friday student and showed slides of how he develops the pictures for his books.
The children especially enjoy projects that they can get their own hands on, like Sara Lawrey’s clay sculpture and Susan McCarthy’s lifesize 3-D papier mache horse — now stabled in the RCES front lobby.
Goal is life enrichment
Last month, Gifted and Talented teacher Amy Gubler coordinated a day of special workshops and activities for second and third graders.
