What is Black History Week? Warner said he prefers the terms “people of color,” “Negro” or “black man,” to simply “black,” or “AfricanAmerican.” The concept that the black man had a past worthy of study was begun in the 1920s by Carter Woodson. Woodson, a Virginian who received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1912, left teaching in 1922 to write.
Woodson wrote such books as “The Disruption of Virginia,” 1912; “The Education of the Negro prior to 1861,” 1915; and “Free Negro Heads of Families in the United States in 1830,” 1925. He organized the Associated Publishers, who published books about Negroes, and in 1926 the organization initiated National Negro History Week.
“Anybody writing books in the 1920s didn’t pay any attention to the accomplishments of people of color and there were a lot of people by that time who had made accomplishments,” said Warner.
