Waterman’s second ride was aboard Luke A Duke, owned and trained by Yovanovich. The former Augustin Stables color-bearer had made only three previous starts over timber after a championship 3-year-old year over hurdles in 1993.
“This was the first time he’d started for me,” said Yovanovich. “I bought him last October from Augustin. I told [Jill] just take a safe trip around [today] and don’t ask for anything big.” The stakeswinning hurdler still has “a classic kick,” but Yovanovich warned his rider not to make, her move too early.
Waterman stayed right with the pace first set by Whiskey For Mike, John DeMichele up, and then by Just You Dare and Pat Cooney. She moved up at the second last and then sustained a run up the long stretch to win by a neck from Just You Dare.
Yovanovich also trained five-eighths mile flat winner Ponsonby, a homebred owned by Upperville’s Col. Robert O’Brien. Marylander Matt McCarron was in the irons.
McCarron also partnered Kinross Farm’s The Weasel to win the longer flat race.
