extra-curricular sports activities, and a host of other projects depend upon volunteers.
Makela said that the county is “blessed with enormous talent” and people from all walks of life who happily share their experience. Volunteer commitment makes the high school computer lab possible because an adult must be on duty at all times. Twenty people, many of them possessing high technology skills, keep the lab operating eight hours a day, five days a week.
The fifth grade computer lab at the elementary school is only open one afternoon a week, but Makela intends to expand its operation with more volunteers. This lab is a critical component of what Makela calls “promoting the middle school concept” of progressively permitting more freedom and responsibility for children in the upper elementary grades.
Working with a close-knit team of eight teachers, Makela and the volunteers provide opportunities for personal growth and exploration that the upper-grade children need to mature.
