The big news at Monday’s meeting of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors was made just after the adoption of the revised agenda and opening comments by Dr. David Gangel, superintendent of schools.
Gangel reported to the board that the school system had some recent events which were each outstanding by themselves: The DARE Day activity which he called a “model for others around the state”; the tremendous performance by the RCHS drama department of “The Tempest”; a first place win by the RCES band at a competition in Florida; and the senior class banquet. All these things, he said, are testimony to the excellence of the school system here and with that he began to discuss future expansion needs.
He told the supervisors that the school board is requesting funding for renovations at the high school of $142,000 so that they may proceed with repairs of a variety of items and move ahead with plans to hire an architect. They estimate the planned expansion at about $3 million, he said.
At that point supervisors Mike Massie and Roger Welch, who have met with the school expansion committee as requested by the board of supervisors, reported that they felt the bottom line figure for the expansion was indeed $3 million.
Welch said “It’s pretty obvious expansion is necessary.... this expansion should be good for 10 to 15 years. Building a third school would be too expensive.”
