This, after all, is horse country. Fox hunting. Grand Prix jumping. Dressage. Eventing. Pony Club. Flat racing, steeplechasing, trail riding, barrel racing. Longlegged colts kicking up their heels as they careen across the pasture. Immortal names like Secretariat. Saluter. The Gold Cup.
All this depends on the availability of horses. Though the horse industry pumps millions of dollars into the state economy every year, horse breeding and foal production remains a tremendous gamble. While mares conceive 9095 percent of the time, embryonic and fetal mortality rates are so high that national foaling rates drop to only 50 percent. Improved reproductive technology is one way to offset these figures.
With other equine researchers at Colorado State University, Dippert experimented with manipulating reproductive hormones to try to improve mares’ fertility. By administering a hormonal agent called equine pituitary extract, “EPE” for short, the scientists caused mares to “superovulate,” producing multiple eggs for fertilization. According to Dr. Dippert, mares in his study group averaged between three and threeand-a-half eggs per cycle. One remarkable mare produced 10. In comparison, he said, “Other species yield 15-35 ovulations.
