McCarthy said the board should look at the renovations scheduled to see what needed to be done immediately and what could wait until tho expansion begins. Some of the planned renovation projects are areas involved in the planned expansion and he said the board needs to “prioritize what it needs to do and what it can live with” and not end up paying to do things twice.
During the public comment session George Sharp, of Washington, suggested the board should study the alternatives to expansion, such as construction of a middle school, in some detail before approving the school expansion.
Sid Gottlieb, of Washington, told the supervisors that the action to remove the International Baccalaureate Orientation from the school budget showed a misunderstanding on their part of the program and was a backwards step. “I’m sure Dr. Gangel and the school board could explain what the program really is if you would talk to them about it.” He also questioned the board’s role in what seems to be “running of the school system in the county. It seems we have a very good school board, elected to do a job.” He said it is now a case of over management.
