Dippert says the embryo transfer program is making remarkable growth. Last year, there were 10 donor mares. The number is now 36. Fourteen recipient mares are pregnant, with 30 mares awaiting transfer. To qualify as an embryo transfer recipient, a mare must be 3-10 years old, at least 15.2 hands tall, and reproductively sound. ERC uses uterine biopsies and ultrasound to assess a mare’s reproductive status. The majority of the horses are thoroughbred, standardbred, quarter horse or appaloosa crosses.
